You Are What You Eat?
Chances are you’ve heard someone say this before. Heck, you’ve probably said it yourself! It makes sense. Your body replaces itself with the nutrients it receives from the food you eat and drink. What you consume directly affects you as a person. When it is in the context of food and nutrition it seems so simple to understand. But what about taking it a step further? Do you ever stop to think about what else you are feeding yourself? What things other than food you are consistently consuming and what type of affect it has on your mind, body and spirit? If you haven’t thought about this before it can be a pretty eye opening thought exercise.
So take a minute, think about your normal day. What type of content are you feeding your brain? Is it mindless junk all day long like Netflix shows, internet memes, and cat videos? Are you caught up in the doom and gloom spewing from the news outlets of the mainstream media? When was the last time you fed your brain something positive? Something that expanded your mind and gave it some needed exercise. Making sure you are giving your brain a balanced diet is something that most of us just haven’t been taught to do or has never even been brought to our attention before!
What are you feeding your soul? Are you getting it daily nourishment? What does that even mean to you? Are you feeding your faith? Getting out in nature? Whatever your religious bent or spiritual beliefs, are you actively getting the nourishment you need and deserve? Is church once per week enough for you? What would it look like if you spent a couple minutes each day feeding your soul in some positive way? How could that affect your life?
Are you feeding your emotions? Are you nurturing the important relationships in life that give you the positive emotions and connections your body needs? Are you spending too much time with and giving too much energy to emotional vampires? Are you stuck in a cycle of anger or negativity? What can you do to reduce the negative emotional impacts in your life and increase the positive emotional interactions? What would that look like to you?
So here is your wake up call! MAKE SURE YOU FEED YOURSELF THAT GOOD GOOD! Be conscientious about what you are consuming in all aspects of life. Now don’t get me wrong. I’m not saying you should never watch mindless junk tv or Netflix, or scroll through social media for a bit. And you can’t always escape the negative aspects of life. But being aware and conscious of what, and how much, negative or positive content you are consuming is essential to bringing balance to your life. I think we can all agree that the more positivity you can consume for your body, mind and spirit the better. However, when negativity enters our lives we have to be resilient enough to recognize it, digest it, and let it go. Don’t get caught up in freaking out that you were fed some negativity. Acknowledge it, learn from it, let it go, and get back to feeding yourself that good positivity!
So remember! Your diet is not just what you eat. It is what you watch, what you listen to, what you read, and the people you surround yourself with. Be mindful of the things you put into your body, emotionally, physically, and spiritually. “You are what you consume!”
